The Watchman at Sunset

Zion National Park · Utah

The Watchman and Virgin River at sunset is one of nature's most iconic scenes in Zion. As the last light of day touched the red cliffs, the river mirrored the golden glow of the sky, creating a perfect balance of color and movement. This long-exposure photograph captures the Watchman's towering presence above the flowing Virgin River, framed by vibrant greenery and a glowing horizon.

I remember almost turning back that night — it was getting very dark, and I thought I might not even find my car in the lot. Just as I started to leave, the clouds broke and the setting sun poured golden light across the cliffs. I quickly set up for a long exposure, letting the Virgin River smooth into a ribbon of light. That fleeting moment became one of my favorite captures — proof that sometimes the best images come just when you're about to give up.
